North Yorkshire and York schools go festival crazy!
Over the past few months primary and secondary aged pupils have been involved in a number of sporting festivals organised by the SportsSpecial School Sports Partnership and the Ebor School Sports Partnership.
In April, over 100 primary aged pupils from mainstream and special schools took part in a Multi Skills festival at All Saints Upper School, York. Multi Skills, primarily the FUNdamentals of movement is a key development area for both partnerships, helping to ensure that from an early age children are developing the core skills of movement, agility, balance and coordination. Fantastic young sports leaders from All Saints Upper School ran the fun and busy festival very successfully, many thanks to those students involved.
May saw 2 football festivals on consecutive days, for primary and secondary pupils. Both were held at York Citys Kit Kat Stadium, with the festivals run in association with the North Riding County FA. Over the 2 days over 150 young people, boys and girls took part, in what were extremely enjoyable and impressive days. Special mentions must go to Brooklands School who brought primary and secondary teams to their first ever festivals, well done guys!
Finally, again in May, on a glorious day, the partnerships first ever Extreme Golf festival ran, with huge success at Flaxby Park Golf Club, Knaresborough. As part of a Big Lottery funded activity and in association with the Golf Foundation, the festival was a culmination of a number of after school and curriculum time lessons. Approximately 50 pupils undertook a 6 hole course, designed and made by Flaxby park Golf Club on their driving range site. Everybody had brilliant day, with some fine golfing talent on display. Many thanks to Flaxby Park Golf Club for all their hard work prior to the event and on the day and also Luke Poppleton from Forest School for all his time arranging the event.
June and July will see further events in swimming, cricket, tennis and Sportsability. What a great year it has been for all those involved in the SportsSpecial SSP and Ebor SSP events. Once again many thanks to all those who help each festival run smoothly and well done to all those that have taken part. The new calendar of events for 2008/09 will be released in July, watch this space for more further reports!
